Graduation Studio: ‘In The Ghetto’

In dit afstudeeratelier wordt ingegaan op het verschijnsel van economische en sociale segregatie in steden, de ruimtelijke manifestatie hiervan en de rol van stadspolitiek, stedenbouw en architectuur. Tegenover het dreigende uiteenvallen van steden in groepen en zones die elkaar de rug toekeren, is er het perspectief van een stedelijke archipel die wordt gevormd door communities die voor zichzelf gebieden ontwikkelen en het intitiatief naar zich toe trekken.
Het afstudeeratelier, dat open staat voor zowel Stedenbouwstudenten als die van Architectuur en Real Estate, bestaat uit drie fases. In de eerste fase nodigen we de studenten uit om met hun ‘favoriete ghetto’ te komen, dit kan zowel een plek zijn die een sypmtoom is van ene gruwelijke ongelijkheid en achterstelling, als een zich bewust van de rest afscheidende ‘intentional community’. Zij worden gevraagd deze ghettos ruimtelijk, sociaal, visueel, cultureel in kaart te brengen op een zo beeldend en prikkelend mogelijke manier.
Vervolgens wordt hen gevraagd een doelstelling voor de verdere ontwikkeling van deze gebieden op te stellen, een charter van ambities en einddoelen, die zo breed mogelijk zijn geformuleerd, ruimtelijk, ecpnomisch etcetera. Hierbij vragen we de studenten zich vooral ook te richten op de relatie die zij het ghetto willen laten hebben met haar omgeving: integratie of juist verdere afzondering?
Tenslotte wordt hen gevraagd om niet alleen een ruimtelijk ontwerp te maken, maar vooral om een strategie te ontwikkelen waarin ruimtelijk ontwerp een centrale rol speelt, maar die erp is gericht de doelen te verwezenlijken. Hierin wordt uiteraard de nadruk gelegd op het politieke proces; wat puur bestuurlijk kan worden opgevat, maar ook activistisch, of representatief, gebruik makend van de technieken van reclamebureaus, politieke campagnes en de media.
Afhankelijk van de afstudeerrichting waar vanuit zij deelnemen aan het atelier worden de precieze leerdoelen en de begeleiding geformuleerd en aangeboden.

The ‘In the Ghetto’ graduation studio focuses on economic and social segregation within cities and the spatial manifestation of these phenomena – it deals with the role of city politics, urbanism and architecture in this matter, to be more precise. Against the threat of cities falling apart into autonomous groups and zones that ignore and deny each other there’s also the perspective of emerging urban archipelagos, formed by communities that develop areas within the city and take planning initiatives.
The studio, which is accessible for students who follow Urbanism, Architecture and Real Estate and Housing master tracks, consists of three phases. In the first phase, students are invited to come with their own ‘favourite’ ghetto, whether this is a place of incredible inequality and underdevelopment, or an area that has consciously separated itself from the rest of the city and became an ‘intentional community’. Students are asked to map these ghettoes socially, visually and culturally as inspirational and creatively as possible.
After that the students are asked to formulate goals for a further development of these areas: a collection of ambitions and end goals as inclusive and encompassing (spatially, economically, culturally, etc.) as possible. Specific attention for the relationship between the ghetto and her surroundings will be asked: is integration within the city, or perhaps a further separation from the rest most desirable?
Ultimately the studio is not just about making a spatial design, but also about the development of a strategy in which the design is specifically used to reach the goals set. Naturally, the political processes behind reaching these goals is specifically emphasized – something that can be interpreted purely administratively, but can also include activist notions or even representational means, using techniques borrowed from advertisement design, political campaigns and modern media.
Depending on what master track participating students follow, specific educational goals and tutoring will be formulated and offered.
